Pitched roof under repair, the kind of job we take on across North Shields

Roof Repairs In North Shields

Steep bank-side terrace with a roof you cannot even see from the street, and a stain spreading on the top floor?

Roof repairs across North Shields, from the Fish Quay and Howard Street to Preston Grange, Marden and Chirton

North Shields climbs from the Fish Quay up the bank to the Georgian and Victorian streets around Howard Street and Northumberland Square, then flattens out into the later estates at Preston Grange, Marden and Chirton. That gives us two very different jobs. On the bank it is tall slate roofs, shared stacks and salt coming straight in off the river mouth. Further back it is 1950s to 70s concrete tiles reaching the end of their run. Either way, free inspection and a written price first.

Roofing In North Shields

North Shields is a port town first and a suburb second. The bank between the Fish Quay and the town centre is stacked with Victorian terraces built on steep ground, often with three storeys at the front and four at the back, slate roofs you need scaffold to reach and chimney stacks shared with the house next door. The Georgian streets around Northumberland Square and Howard Street are older still, with some of the finest roofs in the borough and some of the most neglected. The river mouth is right there, so salt comes up with every easterly, and a lot of these roofs have had a century of cement patching that now needs undoing before the real repair can start.

Away from the river the town is mostly post-war. Preston Grange, Marden, Chirton and the streets off the Billy Mill roundabout were built from the 1950s through to the 70s with concrete interlocking tiles on felt, and they are at the age where tiles crack along the nibs, verges loosen and the felt perishes at the eaves. These are easier roofs to work on than the bank-side terraces, but the exposure is still there: North Shields sits at the mouth of the Tyne and gets wind from the sea on one side and down the river on the other. We treat anything within a mile of the Fish Quay as coastal and fix it accordingly.

  • Steep bank-side terraces above the Fish Quay with tall slate roofs that need scaffold before anyone can look at them
  • Salt straight off the river mouth, carried up on easterlies to every stack and gutter on the bank
  • Georgian and Victorian stacks around Northumberland Square, shared and patched with cement for a hundred years
  • Post-war concrete tiles on Preston Grange, Marden and Chirton cracking at the nibs after sixty-plus winters
  • Wind from two directions, off the sea and down the Tyne, that lifts anything not fixed properly

Our Promise To North Shields Homeowners

A repair is only worth doing if it holds. So every job we do comes with a written workmanship guarantee, and it runs for ten years. That is written on your quote before you say yes to anything. If something we fixed starts letting water in again, you ring us and we come back. That is the whole policy.

We also put the cause in writing. If your leak was a cracked lead soaker rather than the tile you could see from the garden, the quote says so, and the invoice matches the quote. No add-ons discovered halfway up a ladder.

10 Year GuaranteeTen years on workmanship, on every repair, in writing.

North Shields Roof Repair Questions

Do I need permission from North Tyneside Council for roof repairs in North Shields?

For repairs, no. North Tyneside Council treats like-for-like work as maintenance and does not ask for an application. The caveat matters more in North Shields than in some places: the Georgian streets around Northumberland Square and parts of the Fish Quay are conservation areas with listed buildings, and there a change of roofing material or alteration to chimneys can need consent. We match what is there, which keeps you clear of it.

Do you need scaffold for a terrace on the bank above the Fish Quay?

Usually, yes. The terraces on the bank are tall, the ground drops away at the back, and the roofs are steep, so ladders are neither safe nor much use for seeing anything. Scaffold adds to the cost and we will show it as a separate line on the quote so you can see what it is. The upside is that once it is up we can inspect and fix everything on that elevation in one go, rather than coming back three times for three faults.

What is cement flashing and why do you keep taking it off?

It is the sand and cement fillet that a lot of older roofs have where the slates meet a chimney or a wall, used instead of lead because it was cheaper. It cracks as the stack and roof move differently, water gets in behind it, and every repair since has been another layer of cement. We take it off because you cannot seal over a crack that is still moving. Proper lead soakers and a cover flashing move with the roof and stop the leak for good.

Why do the verges on my Marden semi keep coming loose?

Because they were bedded in mortar in the 1960s and that mortar has had sixty winters of frost and sea wind. Once it goes, the end tiles have nothing holding them and the wind coming off the sea gets underneath. Re-bedding in mortar works for a while. A dry verge system, which clips each end tile mechanically to the roof, works for a lot longer and does not need redoing, so that is what we normally suggest on the Preston Grange and Marden estates.
